Micro Fights and Macro Fixes

Greetings, one and all! After all the reviews for the edit came in, we’ve set about resolving what issues can be, and experiment with any revisions that would improve the tempo of the movie. But eventually I came to “The Door,” which amounts to trying to patch a literal hole in the set that I somehow missed on the day, using a variety of techniques. Unfortunately strange things start happening in the middle of the process, so now I’m troubleshooting the fix to the issue. Thus the road goes ever on...

In more enjoyable news, we had a small team on Sunday, but that worked out well. With schedules being what they are we’re thinking that smaller vignettes may serve us better in the moment. So we put our more experienced stunties to work developing a high energy duel…

I love the speed and intent they’re delivering, and look forward to shooting this when the time comes.

Well, that’s about all for this week. Until next time!

More Angles On the Thing

Greetings, one and all! It's a short update this week as most of it is tedium from the outside, though big things are happening, and I'm happy to be in the thick of it again. A second viewing of the Nine Isles project with a larger audience has revealed an even longer list of revisions, including but not limited to a major re-edit of the first block of the movie. With that in mind, we’re just cutting to the chase and getting more assessments on this pass before we move ahead with the really big changes. So currently the project sits with two separate potential beginnings. We shall see where it goes from there…

Still, there are some things that definitely need fixing, so we continue with that. Lots of new sound, some revisions, completing effects, tightening a shot or ten, things like that. It seems that the list has not been as simple as I was hoping.

Well, that’s about all for this week. Until next time!

First Looks and Fight Revisions

Greetings, one and all! Directly after our last update, we set up the final model shoot, and got the elements needed for the last shot we need for the Nine Isles project. The next day we integrated it and begun rendering out test versions of each block of the movie that we then reviewed for any further adjustments that would be needed. The list was not short, but thankfully most of the fixes should be fairly straightforward. Unfortunately there is one thing that could take a few days of painstaking work to resolve, which is further exacerbated by the fact that it could’ve been fixed in fifteen minutes if I’d seen the issue on the shoot day. But we were racing the sun at the time, so it slipped my notice. Ah well…

On a brighter note, the team met again, and went into some heavy revisions on the fight scene from last week. We cut off the ending and rebuilt it with a more kinetic choreography that gives better back and forth between the more skilled characters.

Enough people were tired that the first few attempts were fumbling at best, but eventually everyone got into their rhythm, and finished the development process just as human error began to catch up with us again. All in all, a fairly good day.

Well, that’s about all for this week. Until next time!

Another Slice of the Pie

Greetings, one and all! Now that some clarity has been provided for at least the process going forward, we dive into work. The final miniature has been completed, and is in the process of weathering. Further review showed that the cairn sequence needs some more sound design, so I’ll be working on that next. Now I just need to decide what a shade sounds like…

On top of that, we’re also developing the plot around our new script idea, fleshing out the world, characters, and conflicts that will all inform the few brief minutes you will see in our upcoming short. On their end the stunt team picked up where we left off last week, opening with practicing striking with intent during choreography, then turned to actually choreographing the fight scene.

We will review the work, revise it, and then further develop the scene next week. This is the first recorded fight developed by the team in a couple years, so we’re trying take our time with it, and get everything just so before filming.

Well, that’s about all for this week. Until next time!
