Over Thanksgiving Weekend

Greetings, one and all! Most of this blog week was the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, so it was relatively quiet on the production side, barring technical tests and experiments. That said, the stunt team still met Sunday, and they set to work practicing their unarmed combat.

Starting with a review of the basics, they then ramped up to stringing maneuvers together, and capped it all off with some throws.

As for me, well, this seems to be a week of research, as I prepare for what we have ahead. As mentioned previously, the short we shot this year was an experiment to see what we could potentially pull off in the near future, so the going is slow, but it could well determine the shape of things to come.

Well, that’s about all for this week. Until next time!

Tests and Trolls

Greetings, one and all! This week my body told me, in no uncertain terms, “Slow down, or I’ll stop you.” So… yeah, I’m dialing back the intensity somewhat. I was trying to push through a lot of things in very short order, but now I’ll have to take a more reasonable approach to them. That said, we had some more meetings, and further steps have been mapped out.

Sunday the team met for some stunt chaos. We opened with a skirmish exercise from back in the day called “Trolls,” which gives one player invulnerability, except in one spot… This was followed up by choreographing a fight scene centered around an escape.

On top of that, we’ve also been running tests for the effects and animations for our most recent short. It's pretty much intended to be a narrative experiment to see if we have the technical capacity to do certain effects and shots on a larger scale.

Well, that’s about all for this week. Until next time!

Presentation, Celebration, and Contemplation

Greetings, one and all! This week has centered around a lot of the pitch-related work, connecting with the leadership of different groups, making plans, etc. It’s really exhausting to realize how much work I’ve put in to get this far with this few, and how many more I still have to go…

Anyway, beyond that there has been more writing work, research, and, funny enough, a party.

With our December looking to be more chaotic than most, we decided to have the annual Christmas party in mid-November. There was the usual food and games, and their characters actually ended up in a much better situation than they did at the end of the last party, so things are certainly looking up for them.

On a more cerebral note, the process of the week has led to long contemplations on the themes of transcendent longing, and the loss thereof. Brotherhood, and who we ought to be. As a writer, we do our best work when we’re bleeding on the page, as it were, so these contemplations may, in time, fold themselves into the writing process. The above may seem like a bit of a non sequitur, but this is a blog about the process of making movies, and these things can be a bit… non-linear.

Well, that’s about all for this week. Until next time!

Meets and Previews

Greetings, one and all! First thing this blog week was the first pass at making a Nine Isles trailer. It’s been fun to edit again, though the process also reminded me that the final audio balance pass still needs to be done, which usually happens concurrent with the music sync.

Next up, more meetings were had, still more scheduled, as well as plans being made for a promotional showing event. We also had a viewing of the new Nine Isles opening, and got feedback on that.

We also did some more work on the new script. It’s an interesting challenge to preserve the spirit of hope and adventure in your work when real world pressures are bearing down on you as a writer, but then that’s been the breeding ground for some of the great works of literature in times past, so I really can’t complain.

Last up, the team met on Sunday, and Plan A was a no-go, given weather and team composition, so we went to Plan B…

Yes, it’s the good ol’ storming practice, which is always good fun for the stunties. They’re getting much better at it, especially now that sometimes there may be a “bomb” on a timer in their target location that they need to defuse. Certainly ups the urgency, and helps them not hesitate due to indecision. Toward the end we started mixing things up, with some of the storming stunties getting swapped out with the Oppositional Forces (OpFor), and the former defenders now attacking. All in all, a good exercise.

Well, that’s about all for this week. Until next time!

Role Changes and Writing by the Seat of Your Pants

Greetings, one and all! Well… the temp track I mentioned last time took longer to finish than expected, but it’s finally together. After that, it’s back to some more writing. A professional screenwriter once said it’s the only job he knows of that gets harder the better you get at it. I’m certainly feeling that, at the moment. Once upon a time I could just put a story down on the page, and then edit it, but no longer. Now I’m aware of the ripple effects of every decision. They say there are two schools of writing, the “plotters” and the “pantsers.” The former so called because they meticulously plot everything out before even beginning to put words to page. The latter are so called because the “fly by the seat of their pants,” compared to the plotter.

The reality is that the development order is just different for each, and where they put the priority in their narrative construction. For instance, one “plotter” I know starts with theme and researches the philosophy and psychology associated with that theme, whereas I, as more of a “pantser”, start with the world and characters, and see how themes develop from their interactions. Naturally, this looks far more chaotic, and I do sometimes envy people who can find joy in locking things down before they start writing. But, then again, they do seem to suffer whenever the characters don’t do what they want, so I do have that going for me…

Anyway, on top of that, the stunties met on Sunday, and this time I had two of the more veteran members of this generation step up their game by filling our usual roles and directing the younger members in a choreography session.

It was a fun, exhausting, and interesting experience, and far more educational for me than one might think. Now I must figure out what I should do to build on what we’ve learned…

Well, that’s about all for this week. Until next time!
